Friends,
As you celebrate our country’s independence with family and friends, your email inbox will no doubt be spammed with inspirational quotes from our Founding Fathers. This may be a slight annoyance, but the sender’s intentions are probably earnest and patriotic so take the time to read them, absorb them, and reflect on their meaning.
And most importantly because I am sending you 3 quotes myself! What happened in 1776 was truly divine intervention and the Founding Fathers had the strength and courage to see that His will was carried out. While I take a great deal of inspiration and strength by reading the Founding Fathers’ words, the 3 quotes I am sharing with you today are not about the birth of our country, but the daily slog that we must engage in to protect our liberties as enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
The importance of these 3 quotes is significant to me because I think about them almost daily here at the State Freedom Caucus Network. And these 3 quotes guide our actions at the Network as we help state lawmakers support and defend our liberties.
The chaos and tumult in our country right now is not because of any singular action by the Left or by the liberal Republicans who enable them, but because of the slow, steady erosion that we have allowed to happen over decades and centuries. The Network and our allies are trying to stop that careless erosion. It’s not enough to just stop the big encroachments of liberty - we must stop it all so that the country can reclaim the principles on which our country was founded. So without further ado, please read these quotes, share them with your friends and family, and enjoy each others’ company today. I hope the fireworks are spectacular, the food is plentiful, and your heart and mind are ready to fight on July 5th to take back our country.
“There are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpation.” - James Madison
“Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one--the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.” - C.S. Lewis
“We cannot expect the Americans to jump from capitalism to communism, but we can assist their elected leaders in giving Americans small doses of socialism, until they suddenly awake to find they have communism.” - Nikita Khrushchev (allegedly)
Keep fighting,
Andy Roth
